So OPPO, I’ve been thinking LS swaps are a bit...pedestrian. So how about a M275 V12 swap ! It would be much less practical, reliable, cost effective, but, you would get the advantage of having a biturbo V12. How crazy/un drivable would a V12 Miata be ?

It wouldn’t fit. There’s already fitment compromises made to put an LS into a Miata which makes a Ford 302 easier, but both of those engines are OHV V8s. No OHC V8,V10 or V12 will fit in a Miata.

You would basically have to mount it in the middle somewhere and sit on it.

Why go with something so reliable when you can throw in a carbureted Jaguar V12 from the ‘70's?

I’m ok with this only if we mount the 12 in the trunk.

Even worse idea:
16.4 swap.
W16 Miata, or something.

Even if the width could find a way, it’ll be too tall. A DOHC 60-degree engine is going to be an issue, then you have the turbos to fit and feed.
I know someone put an M275 in a Mustang, and it took body modification for fitment. The Ford 4.6L into a Miata already would require you to chop the nose off and refit it all, so no.
the 302 fits nicely and is decently lightweight for the power you can get from it. There’s a reason it’s been the swap of choice.

Yes, swap the Merc V12 into something, but it just won’t fit in the Miata. Try something like a Chevelle or Vega or Chevette and it would be far more perverse.

Depends on your definition of fitting.

See, the thing with the LS swap is it’s a compact engine. That’s why it gets swapped everywhere.
As cool as that would be, it isn't going to fit.

I love weird swaps!
Someone swapped a BMW M5 V10 into my Volvo C30. Seems amazing!

the people I’ve met who have thought about an ls swap into their miata but ended up not doing that because “that’s what everyone does” are the kind of people who park hard and drive like pussies. If you attempt at being original just for the sake of being original, I think that is the most unoriginal thing ever. V8+miata=dope ass driving machine. I mean whatever floats your boat but (and I am not accusing you of this) people need to spend less time with the engine hood popped and more time hitting the back roads. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION THOUGH SO I DON’T KNOW. I AM NOT THE SUPREME RULER OF ENGINE SWAPS.

I kind of meant that with the Mustang swap. It’s too early to get technical for this data pusher, haha.
They had to modify the body/frame being a unibody and such. But they were make a drift ‘racer’ so it’s a different animal.
I love the motor, shared a building with an investment group who had a client with a Maybach and the thing was smooth like a buttered tiger. It was soft and silky for the most part, but we all knew it would kill anything that got in its way.

Haha, the LS *does* fit in a Miata but requires more work than the Ford 302 does. Since all the kits come with new crossmembers anyway it’s not a huge deal, but you need to have the engine sit lower in the bay to allow the hood to shut compared to a 302.

Beyond the somewhat ridiculous amount of fabrication required for that particular project, you’ll note that the car is running carbs, in part because the stock plenums were too wide. Even if the M275 was the same dimensions as a Jaguar 5.3, the turbo hardware would not clear the strut towers.

Well ok then. I wouldn't waste a M275 on a Miata anyways.

Good luck getting parts, most dealers do vin checks on their v12 models for parts. I guess you could hang onto the donor vin though

Try an M137. It’s the smallest of the Merc V12s.

There definetely have been UZ swapped Miatas, so a DOHC V8 will fit.

Read into it, you’re right, there have been 1UZ swaps. It looks to be about the largest engine you can cram in there, and it’s pretty small compared to something like a Coyote. Someone else posted a Miata with a Jaguar V12, but the hood had to be cut apart and the engine had to be carbed because the intake plenums wouldn’t fit. In the case of the M275, it’s the side-to-side clearance with the turbo hardware that makes the swap physically impossible.

I can make this happen. I have a friend with the perfect shop for this project. I have the skills and knowledge. I even have a friend with a Miata exocet who would probably be willing to do this, if not him then a co-worker who actually races his Miata but we would need to build a tube chassis for it (quite doable). Actually, they both race.
However, I will need to sacrifice a whole S600... Care to donate?
